Patriot Day

Patriot Day is a United States national observance that honors the memory of those killed in the September 11 attacks. It was first observed in 2002, after the proclamation by President George W. Bush. On September 11, 2001 al-Qaeda launched a series of coordinated terrorist attacks upon the United States, killing almost 3,000 people. In the immediate aftermath of the tragic events, the President proclaimed September 14, 2001 as a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the Terrorist Attacks on September 11, 2001. A year later, September 11 was made a National Day of Mourning referred to as Patriot Day. This observance has been proclaimed annually since 2002.

In addition to shifting public perception, this month is used to spread hope and vital information to people affected by suicide. The goal is ensuring that individuals, friends, and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention and to seek help. You don't have to go through it alone.

His top priority is helping ensure customers receive quality and safe transportation of their products.

Q: What accomplishments are you most proud of in your railroad career?

A: "Having served in the U.S. Marine Corps, I have a love for our country that is beyond measure, and now I am honored to continue my service here at Union Pacific as we Build America. I am proud to be a part of our Shipment Quality Team that demands quality in how we Build America. One of my major accomplishments utilizing my strict attention to detail when looking at the securement of finished autos interchanging to Union Pacific. Under my field lead, our team took swift action to increase our Interchange Inspectors' documentation of securement at interchange. National Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month with RK Industries, Inc.

By: Victor Fleming

National Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month graphic

It is essential to underscore the significance of the Suicide Awareness and Prevention initiative within the military. The Army, recognizing the gravity of the issue, actively participates in Suicide Awareness Month to address the alarming rates of suicide among Soldiers. Tragically, statistics from within the Army community reveal a distressing trend, with Soldiers succumbing to suicide. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among people aged 10-14, the third leading cause of death among those aged 15-24 and the 12th leading cause of death overall in the U.S. These sobering figures bring to light the urgent need for heightened awareness and support.

rk logo
Hailing from Denver, CO, RK stands as a notable entity specializing in mechanical contracting, manufacturing, and service provision. Like Union Pacific, PaYS Partner RK dedicates considerable efforts to suicide prevention as a cornerstone of their mental health services. Notably, the construction industry is recognized by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as one of the sectors with elevated suicide risks. Alarmed by this reality, RK has collaborated with national foundations to craft a resource that encourages open conversations about mental health struggles and personal concerns within the workplace. The company goes a step further by ensuring that its workforce receives regular training through the Working Mind program, thereby fostering an environment of mental health support and services. This concerted approach reflects the company's commitment to nurturing a safe and empathetic work atmosphere, resonating not only during Suicide Awareness Month but persistently beyond it. While suicide prevention is important to address year-round, Suicide Prevention Awareness Month provides a dedicated time to come together with collective passion and strength to address this difficult topic. The truth is, we can all benefit from honest conversations about mental health conditions and suicide, because just one conversation can change a life.

During her remarks, Ms. Bourcicot said, "I am really excited to welcome the Ford and PaYS teams here today. The PaYS Program was an obvious connection between Ford and the Army in efforts to close monstrous divides for all Servicemembers."

LTG Stitt also shared remarks, commenting, "The power of an individual, whether you're building cars or you're in the United States Army, the human provides the competitive advantage, today, tomorrow, and in the future. Programs like PaYS, where we strengthen the bonds that exist between the U.S. Army and the men and women in the workforce, we are honored and excited to be apart of the journey."

Mr. Smith said, "Ford's connection to the United States Army is a two-part history. During World-War II, Ford stopped production of Civilian vehicles and produced over 280,000 Jeeps for the allied effort. Its a part of our DNA, culture, and who we are. This collaborative, today, is part of that proud legacy. PaYS supplies a concrete pathway from Servicemember to the Civilian world and is important for Ford to have access to those individuals. There are a tremendous number of opportunities for initiative, creativity, and discipline, and all the things we love about our Veterans."

Mr. Adams said, "It is an honor for Ford to be a part of this partnership. There is nothing more important that helping Veterans transition to a Civilian career. Ford has a long history of supporting Veterans and have been recognized for our efforts. Our support of Veterans continues with actions like this to show our commitment to our military service mission, philanthrophic efforts in support of disabled American Veterans, and our supplier diversity initiative to make sure that Veterans have the connections and access to employment. The PaYS partnership allows Ford to strengthen and elevate our workforce and have direct access to high quality men and women, a group that we know demonstrates leadership, resilience, and reliability. These are some of the key qualities we look for to fill our openings." Ms. Yvette Bourcicot (left) and LTG Stitt (right) during their remarks to the attendees at the ceremony. The Sustainable Ozarks Partnership (SOP) Annual Meeting

By: Samuel Armstrong

Samuel Armstrong gives an overview of Army PaYS Program

The Sustainable Ozarks Partnership (SOP) Annual Meeting occurred in Waynesville, MO. SOP was established in 2012 to formalize regional support for Fort Leonardwood. Concerned community members, leaders from businesses, local and regional governments, state agencies, and civic organizations from the four counties (Laclede, Phelps, Pulaski, and Texas) surrounding Fort Leonardwood created the SOP.

Missouri LT Governor Mike Kehoe, Representative Mark Alford, state, city, and local politicians, Fort Leonardwood's Leadership, businesses, and Kansas City Recruiting Battalion attended the SOP. The resounding theme was that our nation faces military recruiting challenges and resulting implications on our national defense. All personnel present are committed to helping with recruiting efforts. Updates were provided on the final stage of the building of Fort Leonardwood's hospital. CASA Keith Pritchard, Missouri West, provided an update on the CASA involvement in the community and the CASA conference held earlier this year at Fort Leonardwood.
