Happy 248th Birthday, Army!

248 years of sacrifice, dedication, and service. The U.S. Army was founded on 14 June 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized enlistment of expert riflemen to serve the United Colonies for one year. More than a year before the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Army has played a vital role in the growth and development of the American Nation. Drawing on both long-standing militia traditions and recently introduced professional standards, it won the new republic's independence in an arduous eight-year struggle against Great Britain. At times, the Army provided the lone symbol of Nationhood around which patriots rallied.

Caribbean American Heritage Month graphic
Caribbean American Heritage Month

The month was founded by Dr. Claire Nelson and was celebrated across the Nation for the first time by the Institute of Caribbean Studies in 2000. However, the move to officially declare June as National Caribbean American Month started in 2004 when a legislative bill was passed by Congresswoman Barbara Lee. The resolution was made official in 2006 when President George W. Bush signed the proclamation, naming June as National Caribbean American Month.

During this month, knowledge regarding the contributions of the Caribbean is pushed to the forefront, and people are also reminded of the great Caribbean cuisine, their music, and the majestic annual parades of the Caribbean Americans. This is the time of the year when the country is given a blast from the past, topped with a lot of entertainment!

Juneteenth graphic
Juneteenth

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Deriving its name from combining "June" and "nineteenth", it is celebrated on the anniversary of the order, issued by Major General Gordon Granger on June 19,1865, proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas.

Juneteenth honors the date, June 19, 1865, when the last Confederate community of enslaved Americans in Galveston, TX received word that they had been freed from bondage. Union General Gordon Granger led the unit in Galveston who would ensure the proclamation was enforced.

Signed into order, Juneteenth is celebrated as a federal holiday, after becoming an official holiday in 2021 by an Executive Order from President Joe Biden.

PaYS recognizes COL David Grant in honor of Caribbean American Heritage Month

By: Velvett Jenkins
COL David Grant

America's strength has always been rooted in diversity. In the 19th century, the U.S. attracted many Caribbeans who excelled in various professions such as craftsmen, scholars, teachers, investors, songwriters, activists and more. June is Caribbean American Heritage Month and was first recognized in 2005 to shed light on the significance of Caribbean Americans who have strengthened the country through their vibrant cultures, traditions, languages, and values. In honor of Caribbean American Heritage Month, PaYS recognizes COL David Grant, Director, Soldier for Life Program.

Caribbean American Heritage Month graphic
Tell us, in brief, a bit about your background and which Caribbean Island do you represent.

My name is David Grant, and I am a COL in the U.S. Army. I'm the Director of the Army's Soldier for Life Program. The island that my family is from is Jamaica. My mother was born in the capital of Jamaica, Kingston, and my father was born in one of the outlying parishes, St. Ann.

Describe your childhood/life growing up?

I was born in the Bronx, NY. My Family's Jamaican heritage was a big part of my life growing up. I actually lived in Jamaica during my 7th grade year. I attended the well-known Wolmer's Boys' School for one year before returning to the United States.

What influence has your Caribbean culture played in your role with Soldier for Life?

Being of Jamaican and West Indies descent provides me with a source of motivation, especially when I come across other Soldiers and Military personnel who are also from Jamaica, and those who've done so well. That's been one of the interesting and motivating things, where Jamaica is such a small island in the Caribbean, yet there are so many successful individuals that have come from that country, and obviously, in the Military, everyone thinks of former General and Secretary of State, Colin Powell, whose parents were also from Jamaica.
Soldier for Life logo
If you had the opportunity to talk to a younger you, what advice would you give yourself about a career in the Military with programs such as Soldier for Life?

I would say, GO FOR IT! My Military journey was by chance, and I've shared this several times. I grew up 20 miles from West Point, United States Military Academy in a small town called Spring Valley, NY. And even though I had lived there for several years, throughout elementary school, junior high and high school years, I don't ever recall teachers talking about the Military, or even attending the Military Academy. My mother said one day, "Hey, let's go for a drive." She drove me up to West Point and she said, 'You know, this would be a great opportunity.' She shared with me through the years that joining the Military is something that she had thought about doing and she recognized the value of joining the Military. Although she didn't do it, she wanted me to consider it. I was fortunate that my father and mother were both supportive of my goal to join the Army.

So, I would tell my younger self, "Do it!" I would not hesitate to do it again. There are many programs like Soldier for Life that support Soldiers, Veterans, and Military family members. Once you serve, once you become a Veteran, there's so much support out there for you in areas such as health and wellness, education, and employment. Just having the opportunity to serve this country as a Soldier is an honor. It is a very big deal.

What is it that you would like others to know about your culture?

From what I've seen throughout the years and what I've experienced, Jamaicans are people that never give up. There are plenty of Americans who have Jamaican heritage, and you can tell it's a matter of perseverance, a matter of always finding a solution. And that's a trait that's very important. It's very important not just for the Army, but it's important in life. I encourage people out there to maintain perseverance. There is no goal beyond reach and nothing you cannot accomplish when you give it your best shot.

Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this recognition and I am grateful that you have chosen to spotlight the Caribbean culture.

U.S. Army PaYS Program now available to all Soldiers

JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. – The U.S. Army Partnership for Your Success (PaYS) Program is now available to all Soldiers. As of April 2023, every recruit is automatically assigned a PaYS code upon enlistment and are encouraged to register prior to their ship date.

This process will also be retroactive so that all Soldiers currently serving are eligible for PaYS, regardless of whether they received PaYS when they initially joined.

In addition to this new change, the DoD Transition Assistance Program will begin including PaYS on its transition checklist provided to all transitioning Soldiers and will offer assistance in job selection. This will provide PaYS with higher visibility among transitioning Soldiers and new Soldiers alike.

PaYS logo
"With 100k Soldiers transitioning out of the Army annually, the goal is for 90%, or better, to utilize PaYS to assist in their next career," stated Antonio Johnson, PaYS program manager.

Transitioning Soldiers can also now choose to apply to any partnered companies regardless of their previous MOS. With over 1,000 companies to choose from, transitioning Soldiers are guaranteed at least five interviews with partnered companies.

These new improvements are part of the continuous effort to enhance program operations following its redesignation under the TRADOC command in 2019, allowing the program to expand its scope.
Soldiers learn about the PaYS Program

"PaYS not only benefits Soldiers, but it gives partner companies access to a skilled workforce of Veterans with the technical job skills and leadership qualities," Johnson stated.

Partner companies will also benefit from shorter turnaround times with Active-Duty Soldiers who select them during transition and will possess full control over the type of jobs and quantity of guaranteed interviews granted.

These new improvements come just in time for the release of the PaYS Live app, a nationwide employment website that will contain live job postings by PaYS partners and allow for better communication between partners and applicants. The app is expected to launch August 1st of this year and will be available at ArmyPaYSLive.com.

For more information about PaYS, visit www.armypays.com

Addendum: The PaYS Reservations application will accept reenlisted Soldiers starting June 27th. The Launch details of the LIVE application have been updated since the original article appeared.

PaYS Highlights American Corporate Partners (ACP)

By: Velvett Jenkins

ACP logo

Mentorship is essential in the workplace because it offers the chance to collaborate and cultivate long-lasting relationships while becoming experts in the industry. Much like the Army PaYS Program, American Corporate Partners (ACP) is a resource organization that connects post-9/11 Veterans with corporate professionals for customized mentorships. Veterans find meaningful employment outcomes, whether it's a higher-paying job or a promotion. The average starting annual salary for Veterans who use ACP is $93,000. All post-9/11 Veterans who served at least 180 days of Active Duty since 9/11 are eligible for ACP.

ACP is a National non-profit organization dedicated to helping Military Veterans and Active-Duty Spouses make connections in the Civilian workforce. Since 2010, more than 28,000 Veterans have found success through ACP. Typical mentorship goals include resume review and interview preparation, career exploration and understanding of job opportunities, career advancement once a position is obtained, work-life balance, networking, small business development, leadership, and professional communication. Strong leadership skills lead to increased economic development.

ACP's roster of mentors is filled with Senior Executives from hundreds of America's top companies, like Johnson & Johnson, Amazon, Disney, Lockheed Martin, Morgan Stanley, and more.

Community Spotlight: PaYS Recognizes Alyssa Salmon

By: Crancena Ross

Alyssa Salmon New England Recruiting Battalion logo

For June's Community Spotlight, we're excited to highlight Ms. Alyssa Salmon for her impactful contributions to Soldiers. Ms. Salmon, Chief of Advertising and Public Affairs for the New England Recruiting Battalion, has worked for the U.S. Army since August 2017.

What is the most unique aspect of your job?

"The aspect I love most about my job is sharing the benefits and opportunities available in today's Army," said Salmon. "With more than 150 career options, the Army can be a pathway for individuals to achieve both their personal and professional goals. I really enjoy working with the Soldiers across New England and helping them tell their unique Army stories. We look to find engagements where they can connect with those who may be interested in learning more to see if the Army's right for them."

Are you familiar with the Army PaYS Program? In your words, describe why you believe PaYS is essential for Soldiers?

"The PaYS Program really is a win-win for those who are looking to join as well as the companies who partner with the Army. It's validation for Soldiers' professionalism is a very real, tangible way, for companies to show Veterans that the community values military service and those who serve. It reinforces a Soldier's career experience to know that their skills translate so naturally to the Civilian workforce."

How do you see the PaYS Program intertwined in your work?

"I'm always looking for ways to engage with the community and the PaYS Program is a great way for business leaders to learn how they can hire more Veterans. The Army invests so much in its people so as Soldiers transition out of military service into Civilian life; the PaYS program just makes sense. The experience and skill sets that go along with their career fields in addition to traits that employers are looking for - leadership, focus on mission, working on a team, makes Veterans the type of employees that companies are looking to hire. It's always a great conversation with business leaders when it just clicks, and they recognize exactly what a strong partnership this can be."

Ms. Salmon has been instrumental in the development of relationships and leveraging connections between the Soldiers, Army, and community partners.

Thank you, Ms. Salmon for your dedication to the Army.

In the Spotlight with Travis Carter

Travis Carter

Marketing Analyst Travis Carter is in the spotlight for his hard work and dedication to the PaYS team. Mr. Carter is from Louisiana, famous for its Cajun and Creole cuisine, Mardi Gras celebrations, diverse cultural heritage, bayous, jazz music, and the birthplace of American Blues.

What inspired you to join the PaYS team?

I really believe in what the program stands for and what it can do to help our Soldiers find gainful employment post training/post career.

Tell us why the PaYS Program is important to Soldier Success?

The PaYS Program is important to Soldier success because it sets them up with employment opportunities immediately post training or post service time. From experience, getting interviews is the hardest part of a hiring process. Registering with PaYS guarantees Soldiers five interviews with companies of their pick within the PaYS Partner network.

What do you think is the most important skill that it takes to be a successful PaYS Marketer?

Anyone that knows me and how I operate, I would say the most important skill is the ability to speak to people and be personable with them. We are engendering commitments to partnerships with the organizations we deal with, and if a marketer lacks the ability to be personable, then you won't be successful.

What's something surprising that few people know about you?

I played baseball at the collegiate level. In my spare time, I coach softball for a youth league and run baseball skill clinics.

Share something that you've always wanted to try or learn?

I have always wanted to learn how to fly a plane.

The PaYS team is grateful to have Mr. Carter onboard reaching his one year anniversary as a Marketing Analyst. Thank you for your hard work!
